If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? Psalm 11:3

Rev. Franklin Graham, son of Dr. Billy Graham, has risen to a remarkable level of spiritual leadership in America, as both President and Chairman of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA). Graham boldly addresses the controversial issues of our day with plain biblical truth. These excerpts are from Graham’s Calling the Nation to Repentance:

I believe we are perilously close to the moral tipping point for the survival of the United States of America… For centuries, our country has stood brightly as a “city upon a hill,” defending freedom abroad, and affirming our spiritual heritage as one nation under God.

In recent decades, however, that enduring foundation and heritage have been under relentless and vicious assault… There now exists deep-seated antagonism and hostility toward Christianity in every seat of power in this nation—government, media, courts and education. It has become open season on Christians. Sin is openly celebrated and flaunted by the highest office in our land, and men and women of deep and sincere faith are publicly scorned.

I refuse to bow or bend… to be silent and watch the future of our children and grandchildren be offered up on pagan altars of personal pleasure and immorality… Daniel foretold dark days for Israel, but declared, “the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action” (Dan 11:32).

That’s why on Jan. 5, [we began] in Des Moines, Iowa… a nationwide series of meetings… the most crucial we have ever conducted. We call it the Decision America Tour, and by early autumn, I will have been to all 50 state capitals, preaching the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and asking for God to heal our spiritually sick—and dying—land.

In every state, we’ll be inviting believers to come and stand with us, and unbelievers to put their faith in Jesus Christ. The schedule for several months is HERE. More dates will be released soon. If you are unable to come, you can still watch the live webstream…

I will ask the audience in each state three specific things.

First and foremost, I want people to pray for our land and our leaders. Despite what the New York Daily News says, God can fix this. He works powerfully and effectively through prayer. Prayer calls on omnipotent, omniscient God to accomplish His sovereign will…

Second, I want to encourage God’s people to go to the polls, not just to elect our president but also for local and state elections. In the 2012 elections, an estimated 17 million evangelical Christians did not vote – more than enough to tip an election that was decided by 5 million votes…

Make sure you check the qualifications for every candidate. See where they stand on crucial moral issues like abortion and same-sex marriage. Cast your ballot for those who stand boldly for biblical truth…

Third, engage in the civic process wherever you can. Think what a huge difference it can make if godly men and women are elected to offices across this nation. They will have opportunities to positively influence our neighborhoods, communities and schools. Perhaps we can check the decaying spread of policies promoted by those with hostile anti-Christian agendas.

I don’t believe the foundation laid by our forefathers is destroyed, but it certainly is cracked and crumbling. We may face trials. Psalm 11:5 says, “The Lord tests the righteous.” But He promises that He will not leave us nor forsake us (Dt 31:6). The rest of Psalm 11 assures us that God is on His throne in the heavens; that He hates wickedness and violence, and He loves justice.

For America’s sake, Christians need to pray, vote, and work hard in our cities and towns to be a clear voice for God’s eternal truth and His redeeming love. I hope God will use the Decision America Tour as a spark for revival and awakening in our nation. My confidence and trust is completely in His mercy and grace (Franklin Graham, January 2016, edited for space; Read the entire article in Decision Magazine).

More on the 2016 Elections –As Graham wrote, “we are perilously close to the moral tipping point for the survival of the United States of America.” The people we elect to public office and the policies they champion will determine, in large part, the destiny of America. How we vote is an expression of our own Christian character and obedience to God, especially given Christ’s mandate that we be salt and light in the world. How could we, who have enjoyed ordered liberty, unprecedented in the history of the world, be so ungrateful as to not vote or to vote and disregard our biblical values? If we lose America, God forbid that it be because Christians did not take their responsibility to vote their values, especially in 2016!

Our Constitutional Republic was born because America’s founding era pastors preached the word of God pertaining to elections. They taught qualifications God requires of civil leaders (see Ex 18:21). The American people read their printed sermons with enthusiasm (see 1/27/16 Prayer Targets). But a recent study shows that even among Christians registered in church voter registration drives, only about half actually vote. This is a pitiful commentary on the church today. Pew Research Center reports that the number of voters who have no qualms about supporting an atheist for president has grown from 32% in 2007 to 41% today, not including 6% who would prefer an atheist. Only 51% of Americans say they would be less likely to vote for an unbelieving president. True liberty is not possible for a nation that does not believe and welcome the God of the Bible (see 2 Cor 3:17). Because our nation was founded upon faith in God as Creator and Supreme Judge of the World from whom our rights derive, it is critical that Americans choose a man whose values, life and proven record demonstrate a faith in and fear of the God of the Bible.

Read Joel Rosenberg’s analysis of the Christian vote in 2012. If the hostility toward Christians and the loss of religious liberty we have seen during the past eight years continues, we will see wholesale persecution of Christians in America in the not-too-distant future. If the church does not take a stand in an important election such as we now face, will it stand when jobs and careers are on the line because of the deeply held beliefs of its members? Will it stand when obedience to Christ requires disobedience to civil and other authorities who are commanding obedience to immoral policies, ordinances and laws? May this loss of religious liberty and the hostility toward Christians motivate each of us to pray and act in 2016 as never before! (See WSJ Debate & Primary CalendarActs 20:28 Pastors; 2016 Pew Poll; Rosenberg on Election 2012; Iowa Evangelical Turnout; Free to Believe).

  • Pray that God’s people across America will be “salt and light” and that they will pray, share their faith, and exercise their responsibility to vote as never before. May they follow the example of believers in Iowa, who turned out in massive numbers. May they vote in keeping with the Lord’s instruction to choose leaders who are “1) capable, 2) fear God, 3) love truth and 4) hate dishonest gain” (Ex 18:21; Ps 110:3; Mt 5:13-16; 28:18-20; 1 Cor 4:2).

Finally FRC’s Watchmen on the Wall, Vision America, Florida Family Policy Council, and Liberty Counsel partnering with The Awakening 2016 are inviting pastors to a Pastors Awakening Summit on March 4th, 2016 at Faith Assembly of God Church in Orlando, Florida. Pastors and their spouses will be provided a complimentary hotel room for Friday, March 4th at the Gaylord Palms Resort (register HERE) and a complimentary admission to Liberty Council’s The Awakening 2016 on Saturday, March 5th (over 2,000 Christian Activists). In nearby Vero Beach. Christian Businessman and Patriot John Bona will host the annual Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast where FRC’s Tony Perkins will be the keynote speaker. Now is a good time to send your pastor on a short vacation to participate in what we expect to be historic events! Our friends at the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation are hosting a National Congressional TeleBriefing on February 9th at 1 PM. Thank you for praying!
