I requested prayer over Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, heard by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. I wrote:
Teachers unions have long been bastions for a radical progressive agenda, using Christian’s dues to advocate for policies and people – from local school boards to the U.S. President.
You ask, “If somebody doesn’t join a union, they nonetheless share in the benefits obtained by the union through collective bargaining…. Therefore it doesn’t seem too unfair to expect non-union members to chip in something for the costs incurred in the collective bargaining?”
The teachers are not objecting to the union’s collective bargaining, but for their forced payment of dues to support the undermining of their own fundamental moral, religious and political beliefs. Many advocate for pro-abortion, pro-LGBT agenda laws, laws that undermine parental rights and much, much more. Would you be happy being forced to support Planned Parenthood taking the lives of millions because they also do a few good things, like urge women to have mammograms, venereal disease screening, etc.? How many positive benefits would an organization have to provide in order for Christians or other people of conscience to support their advocacy of evil?
Scripture teaches:“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” (2 Cor 6:14); “Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening… no spring yields both salt water and fresh” (Jas 3:11-12).
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? …. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them” (Mt 7:15-20).
Jesus also said, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men” (Mt 5:13)….
I’ve been very blunt here. But Christian apathy (i.e., doing little or nothing), while those who reject biblical morality labor to impose their ungodly and immoral worldview upon us all and now demand that we not only acquiesce to it and celebrate it but also pay for it, is rapidly moving us toward a permanently godless nation.
Christian citizens must use their legal rights as citizens via city councils, state legislatures, Congress, the courts, etc., to be salt and to preserve our culture from evil and ultimate self-destruction. Unless God graciously intervenes and grants a revival and awakening the prospects are dim. So we need to pray as never before!
Free to Believe – The California teachers case is just one in thousands of cases in which unions and government entities, even the President of the United States have violated the right of conscience of America’s citizens and especially Christians. FRC President Tony Perkins believes that the fight for religious liberty is the most important front in the war to defend faith and family today. Historically, various emperors in the Roman Empire, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, etc., sought to silence unbending Christians in their day, and now radical Islamist regimes have murdered 500,000 Christians in Iraq alone and multiplied hundreds of thousands more across the world. Why? Because vital Christians, with their liberating, transcendent Truth about our loving God, His perfect law and gospel, are the greatest of all threats to their schemes to obtain power and control to reshape world according to their own unbiblical world view. So they use threats, intimidation, and violence! We are seeing a disturbing drift toward the same in our country and by our own government.
What is the solution? Under God, it is the church. The key to leading the church is the pastor. Courageous pastors can turn the tide. That is why we are investing in “championing pastors to transform America.” In fact, FRC’s Church Ministries division, Watchmen on the Wall, reached a major milestone last month, having enlisted 10,000 American pastors to join us in pledging: to 1) Pray as never before, and to teach God’s people how to pray; 2) Preach the whole counsel of God, including how it applies to cultural issues of our day, and 3) Partner with other pastors to prepare and to stand up for what is right when their moral and spiritual leadership is required in their community.
We saw the power of pastors and their churches in Houston. When their mayor and city council passed a bill to give special rights based on sexual orientation and gender identity, allowing men to use the girls and women’s bathrooms, with the threat of fines against anyone who would attempt to prohibit them, pastors across the city jumped into action. They prayed together, mobilized the people, endured intimidation, fought through lawsuits, registered voters, and their people went to vote, defeating the evil ordinance 61%-39%. Pastors are the key to turning around a community. But they need our help, not only to be Aaron and Hur, lifting their arms in prayer, but also in other ways.
That is why FRC is encouraging pastors to appoint “Culture Impact Teams,” a church ministry made up of motivated believers in each church who are eager to lead members to be change-agents in the community. Basically, the team members help inform, equip, alert and mobilize the congregation to function as the Salt and the Light. The CIT members essentially serve as associate “Watchmen” with their pastor to keep an eye on local and state initiatives that could impact the church or family or lead to moral decline in the community, and let him know what they are seeing so that he can lead the charge.
This coming Saturday, June 16th from 9:00 a.m. until 1 p.m. ET, FRC is conducting a fast moving, equipping event to help churches large and small to develop a CIT ministry. Previously, churches and church small groups could register, but we are now registering individuals who want to make a difference (Free to Believe; Register).
- Heavenly Father, we appeal to you to intervene on our behalf, to deliver us from the destroyers of the foundation of Christian faith that enabled America to become a great nation. Stir us to take a stand for you. Grant courage to pastors, whose leadership is so desperately needed in this hour. Raise up spiritual warriors! Breathe upon Free to Believe! May this effective tool enable pastors to envision, train and equip their people and networks to birth powerful and effective culture impact ministries. Use them, Lord, in this great contest as agents of revival and restoration. May we be the salt and light you intend us to be. Draw America to yourself, Oh God! (Neh 4:14; Ps 2: all; Is 58: esp. v. 12; Jn 6:44; Jn 10:11-15; Rev 2:10; 12:11).
Finally: 1) On Monday night Tony Perkins delivered his 2nd Annual “State of the Family” address, depicting a far different America than President Obama envisioned in his State of the Union Speech. I urge you to listen to Tony, take notes, and pray over the points he raised (Read Our Stake in the Union; View Speech). 2) The Barna Group has released a study showing that a troubling number of Christian teenagers are shrinking from sharing their faith among their peers. Perhaps that’s why Tony Perkins was led to write, No Fear, which highlights examples of courageous young people who are making a difference for Christ across America today. 3) Observers say that the teachers’ case against the California Teachers’ Union went very well for the cause of freedom. 4) Franklin Graham’s Decision America Tour is making a significant impact. He says “It’s open season on Christians in America.” Please consider joining the gathering at your state capitol. Thank you for praying.
